Kira Talent is an online admissions assessment and interview platform used by universities and other programs. It is not one standardized exam with the same questions, timing and scoring everywhere. Kira supports asynchronous assessments, where you record or type your answers, and live interviews, and what you see depends on how your school has set it up. This guide is for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing and other pre-health applicants, plus residency applicants, who have been told their assessment or interview runs on Kira.
Arvin Ardakani, a final-year medical student who founded ExperienceMED, coaches applicants for Kira assessments, including TMU medicine’s recorded assessment, Western Dentistry’s ABS and live Kira interviews, through Arvin’s Kira Assessment Masterclass. The official information below was checked on 21 October 2026 for the current admissions cycle.
What is Kira Talent used for in Canadian admissions?
“Kira” tells you where an assessment takes place. It does not, by itself, tell you what you will be asked to do.
TMU medicine runs an online asynchronous assessment on Kira with six timed questions and video and written responses. Western Dentistry uses Kira for the Western ABS, an autobiographical sketch with written and oral (video) components. Those are two school-specific assessments, not two sittings of one national Kira exam. For the details, read TMU medicine’s Kira assessment format and dates and the Western Dentistry ABS on Kira guide.
Other Canadian programs use Kira for interviews. Memorial University medicine runs an 8-station MMI and a 30-minute Competency Assessment on Kira over two days, and the University of Waterloo pharmacy program holds a live, synchronous panel interview on Kira with practising pharmacists and current pharmacy students. See Memorial medicine’s Casper and interview requirements and Waterloo pharmacy’s Casper and interview format.
| Source of information | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Your school’s admissions pages | Published requirements, application cycle and selection stages |
| Your official invitation | Access instructions, deadlines and any extra assessment details |
| Kira’s Applicant Help Center | Platform setup, practice features and technical guidance |
| A coach such as Arvin Ardakani | Practice with original prompts, honest marking and feedback on how your answer comes across |
Before practising, pin down your university, program, entry year and assessment type. A search result about another program may describe a real process that does not apply to yours.
Is a Kira assessment recorded or live?
An asynchronous response is recorded or written without an interviewer present at that moment. A live interview is a real-time conversation. Kira provides guidance for both.
That difference changes how you prepare. A recorded answer has to stand on its own, with no follow-up question to rescue it. A live interview also asks you to listen and adapt as the conversation moves. Kira’s practice screen will not show you which one you have: Kira says practice questions are always asynchronous, even when the real interview is live.
What happens after you get a Kira invitation?
Kira’s Check-In page organizes the steps before your assessment or interview. Depending on your school’s setup, these can include a welcome video, registration, supplemental materials, Device Setup, payment, practice and the assessment itself. Not every applicant gets every step.
Clicking Check In does not start the assessment. You can return to the Check-In page before your deadline or interview start time using the link in your invitation or registration confirmation. A real timed assessment, once started, is a different matter, so read each screen before you continue and know which stage you are entering.
How many questions are on a Kira assessment, and how long does it take?
There is no single question count or total time across schools. TMU’s six-question format is a fact about TMU’s assessment, not a default for every Kira user. Your invitation gives the preparation and response timers, the overall time and the completion deadline that apply to you.
TMU says invitations go out by email on 12 November 2026 and the assessment runs from 19 to 22 November 2026. Western Dentistry lists its ABS for mid-November, after applications close on 1 November. If you are preparing for TMU, the TMU Kira preparation guide covers what to practise.
How are Kira practice questions different from the real assessment?
Kira’s applicant guidance draws these lines:
| Feature | Practice, if your school includes it | Real assessment or interview |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Depends on your school’s setup | Provided for the assessment you are invited to |
| Attempts | You can redo questions | One attempt per question or station |
| Replay | You can replay your responses | No replay |
| Evaluation | Not evaluated, and seen only by you | Evaluated |
| Questions and timers | May differ from the real assessment | Set by your assessment instructions |
Use practice to learn the platform and test your camera and microphone. Treat it as a technical rehearsal, not a preview of the real questions or timers.
What does Kira assess, and how is it scored?
Start with your school, not a universal Kira score. TMU names understanding of and commitment to its mission and values, plus communication, reasoning and problem-solving. Western Dentistry describes its ABS as a chance to show who you are beyond grades, including your non-academic strengths.
Schools do not publish every criterion or weighting. There is no national passing score and no Casper-style quartile for Kira. When Arvin Ardakani prepares a student for a Kira assessment, he starts from the competencies the school names and marks practice answers against them.
How to prepare for Kira without memorizing a script
- Confirm the task. Find the response modes and published competencies for your program.
- Collect genuine experiences. Make short notes on responsibility, disagreement, feedback, mistakes and learning. Never invent achievements.
- Practise unfamiliar questions. Answer before you read any example, so you see where you actually struggle.
- Review one weakness at a time. Check that your action and reasoning are clear, then try a new prompt.
- Test your setup. Use Device Setup and any practice your school provides before the real assessment.
Kira asks for natural, authentic answers and says that fitting more words into a response does not necessarily make it stronger. It also suggests recording yourself on common interview questions before an invitation arrives. For original prompts to practise with, see Kira interview questions and answers.
A five-minute practice exercise
Practice prompt: Describe a time you changed your approach after receiving feedback.
Take a minute to choose a real event. Record a short answer covering the situation, your role, your action, the result and a reflection on what changed. These five parts come from the personal-story approach Arvin Ardakani teaches, not from an official Kira rubric, and the six skills he marks every answer on are set out in what he looks for when marking an answer.
Watch the recording once. Can a listener name the feedback and the change without guessing? If your answer ends with “I learned to communicate”, replace that general lesson with a specific behaviour you can point to. The five-minute limit is a practice setting, not an official Kira timer.
For one system that works on every Kira prompt, see the Kira Assessment Masterclass, or start with the free Kira assessment.
What device and browser do you need for Kira?
Kira recommends a laptop or desktop computer and also supports some mobile phones and tablets. Its applicant guidance lists Google Chrome as the recommended desktop browser and sets out the supported browser and operating-system combinations, so check that page against your own device.
Choose a quiet space, plug in your device, update your software in advance and close other applications. Kira also advises disabling browser extensions, such as grammar tools and ad blockers, that can interfere with the platform.
For accommodations, follow your school’s own process and deadlines. A platform feature is not an approved admissions accommodation. TMU, for example, publishes a separate accommodation process for its asynchronous assessment in its admissions FAQ.
Common Kira mistakes
- Treating Kira as one standardized exam. Begin with your school’s requirements.
- Copying another school’s timer. Use it only as a practice constraint unless your instructions match it.
- Assuming practice retakes apply to real questions. Kira’s guidance says they do not.
- Reading model answers instead of practising. Make your own attempt, then review it.
- Assuming every assessment is free. Payment depends on the setup; Western Dentistry asks applicants to pay a required ABS fee through Kira.
Your next step
Write down your program, entry cycle, response modes and confirmed deadline. Then record one practice response and review one weakness. To have your answers marked by Arvin before the real assessment, try the free Kira assessment, see the Kira Assessment Masterclass, or message him on WhatsApp using the button on this page.
ExperienceMED is independent of Kira Talent and the universities mentioned.
